Kenya, a vibrant and diverse country in East Africa, is home to approximately 44 million people. With a rich cultural heritage and breathtaking landscapes, the nation is also deeply rooted in faith — around 82% of the population identifies as Christian. Despite these strengths, Kenya faces significant social and economic challenges that affect its most vulnerable populations.
Among the most pressing issues is the plight of children. Nearly half of the country’s orphan population — about 46% — have lost one or both parents to AIDS. In addition, an estimated 250,000 to 300,000 children are living and working on the streets, struggling to survive without consistent care, shelter, or education. These realities highlight the urgent need for compassionate outreach and long-term support for Kenya’s youth.
At the heart of this response is the Feeding Program run by Sister2Sister International Ministry in Muthithi–Murang’a. Each day, the ministry provides a nourishing meal to 200 children, offering not only sustenance but also a message of hope and care.
For many participants, this daily meal may be the most reliable nourishment they receive — and it fosters a sense of community, security, and well‑being. Through this vital program, Sister2Sister is making a tangible difference in the lives of Kenya’s most vulnerable children, giving them strength to face today and hope for tomorrow. Purity Ruchugo envisioned a transformative children’s home where vulnerable young girls in Kenya are given much more than shelter — they are offered a sanctuary of love, dignity, and opportunity. This nurturing environment provides a stable, caring family atmosphere, where every girl receives an educational foundation and practical life skills — like sewing, baking, cooking, gardening, housekeeping, knitting and other life skills.
Central to this vision is the spiritual formation of each child, grounded in the love of God, compassion, and personal worth. By equipping these young girls with both the tools they need to thrive and the belief that they are cherished, Sister2Sister seeks to empower them to step courageously into their future, breaking cycles of poverty and injustice.
Our most ambitious and impactful undertaking to date has been the construction of the Sister2Sister Children’s Home & School in Ngong, Kenya. After seven years of dedicated effort, careful planning, and unwavering faith, the building now stands fully operational — a vibrant testament to what compassion and perseverance can accomplish. Remarkably, the entire project was completed debt-free, thanks to the generosity of our supporters and the diligent stewardship of our resources.
This home and school serve as a safe haven for children who have faced immense hardship, offering not only shelter and education but also love, structure, and spiritual guidance. It is a place where young lives are being restored and futures are being rewritten. What once began as a dream has become a beacon of hope, and we remain committed to ensuring its ongoing impact for generations to come.
Construction in rural Kenya required thoughtful planning, patience, and seamless coordination between Sister2Sister International Ministries in the U.S. and the dedicated teams working on the ground in Kenya. This cross-continental collaboration was essential to overcoming logistical challenges and ensuring every step of the project was carried out with care and purpose.
The guest house was the first structure completed in October of 2018, providing a comfortable and convenient place for workers, volunteers, and visitors to stay throughout the construction of the Children’s Home & School.
Over the next seven years, the construction of the Sister2Sister Children’s Home and School came to life through the combined efforts of dedicated volunteers, skilled workers, and committed staff. Throughout the process, local laborers often gathered to pray over the work being done, covering the project in faith and hope. At long last, the building was completed — a beautiful, debt-free facility that stands as a powerful symbol of community, perseverance, and God’s provision for this mission.
With the building now complete, Purity Ruchugo turned her attention to essential infrastructure needs: top priorities included digging a functional well to provide clean water and adding solar panels to ensure reliable, sustainable power for the home and school.
Since its inception, the ministry, founded by Purity Ruchugo, has provided life-changing programs for vulnerable children and families through education, nutrition, spiritual care, and safe shelter. The Sister2Sister Children’s Home & School now stands as a beacon of hope in the heart of Ngong, Kenya serving as both a refuge and a launching pad for dreams. Over the last 15 years, the ministry has provided more than just walls and a roof, it has created emotional support, educational opportunity, renewed dignity, and lasting empowerment for the next generation.
